Representing Foreigners in Medieval Epics
with Prof. Levente Seláf (Université Côte d'Azur)

30. April 2026, 20:00 GMT+2 (online)

The conference propose the construction of alterity within the medieval epics of  Eastern Europe, situated at the confluence of Latin, Byzantine, and Ottoman spheres. By tracing the thematic origins of these narratives, it explores how foreign figures functioned as semiotic tools to negotiate collective identity and religious boundaries. The analysis focuses on the evolution from a historical adversary into a mythologized archetype within the region’s diverse oral and written traditions.
